Apple's most recent updater for the iPod, the January 10th updater, has given me many more bad changes than good on my 60gig iPod with video. In case you hadn't heard, the aforementioned iPod updater causes video playback to malfunction on 60gig iPods with video. More specifically, on some video podcasts (ie HAK.5 and commandN) video playback will go on fine for about thirty seconds, but after thirty seconds, the video freezes for five seconds, and then comes back, but without audio. It is a known issue on forums, but Apple has yet to do anything about it. I could revert the firmware on my iPod back to version 1.0, but then, my iPod Radio Remote will not work with my iPod. I am quite disgusted with Apple. Also, I have called Apple's tech support. The tech support rep, who shall remain nameless, told me to try restoring my iPod, but that didn't work. He then tried to tell me that I should only put music in my iTunes library, and just keep all of my videos in one playlist, but that's crazy-talk! The iTunes library stores ALL media that you have in iTunes.
And I thought Apple had the best products, and the best tech support out there--I guess that I was wrong...
You're not alone in this. I read the discussions over at Apple's support and it's a big stink. Apple better do something about this soon or this could turn out a lot worse than the battery fiasco. I kept my iPod at the stock firmware because of this. It's one thing to release an update with bugs, but it's another thing to release an update with bugs and not even acknowledge them.
I had a similar problem when i updated my 30g ipod video with the new firmware and iTunes update somewhere around February 10 (not completely sure about the date tho). Basically it royally screwed me so now i have to manually update my songs and podcasts/vidcasts rather than let itunes do it itself. From calling three different people at tech support, to shipping my ipod to have it repaired, to physically bringing it to the apple store, i got a boat load of different answers ranging from a definite hardware issue, to blaming it on my usb 1.1, to whatever else they chose to blame it on...
Lets just say i gave up updating my itunes and ipod firmware...
Updates usually don't cause problems, but this time one obviously did. Apple's not perfect. After all, it's run by humans no matter how stylishly they dress. ;)
Sometimes the runaround with tech support can drive one mad. I've been having problems with my iMixes on the iTMS. I just wanted to have an iMix of all the songs I had purchased that year. The problem was that the iMix set didn't match the original (87 only out of over 300 songs showed up). It took me eight months and over a dozen emails of insulting "user error" type replies before somebody finally figured out what was happening (iMixes are limited to only 100 songs, and some of the songs in the first 100 weren't listed with Apple anymore). Now, I could throw my hands in the air, curse Apple's name, and switch, but I've been over on the other side - a lot longer than I've been on this side, in fact - and it's definitely worse over there.
Here's a tip, Kyle, when dealing with AppleCare. If you get an idiot techie on the phone, hang up and call back. All Apple techs are not created equal, but there are some crackerjack people working over there. You just may have to deal with a few nuts before you get them.
