Should iPods be Allowed at School?

advertisement

At my school, the Lynhurst Seventh and Eighth Grade Center in Indianapolis, Indiana, iPods are somewhat strictly not allowed at school. But my question is, what harm could they possibly cause? Well, first of all, most kids, even though they should not, bring iPods to school, including myself. However, the majority of these students only listen to these iPods when they do not cause any disruption or disruption. Examples of times during which I think that iPods should be able to be listened to are at lunch, during homeroom (in some cases), when students have finished a test, quiz, or exam, or any other "downtime". Of course, I suppose that I should address the opposing argument which, I assume, is that they could be used in class, but the same can happen with anything else. For example, perhaps schools should not allow students to carry paper at school because during class students could be drawing on the aforementioned paper instead of paying attention in class. Of course, I am being sarcastic. Another point supporting my argument is that, perhaps school lunch rooms would be quieter if students were all listening to their favorite music, their favorite podcasts, or their favorite radio station. For example, at my school, the cafeteria often gets quite loud while students are eating lunch, but if people were listening to their music, instead of talking, or getting into fights, for that matter, they would be listening to their music player.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

I totaly agree! my teacher says that iPods create jealousy from the people that dont
have iPods, come on! Its not like we show them off on purpose! we have to listen to iPods some how! we cant just hide when we listen to our music, for the people not to be jealous. I guess that's what we have to do , hide when we listen to music, because in my school iPods are not alloud at all.

music is fine in school as long as your not listening to it during instruction period. Because actually the music will help the kid stay on task and get there work done. I know this for a fact because i have two classes that allow music and we usually don't get bad grades or get yelled at for being loud and obnoxious(unlike my other two which every ones always loud).

I'm an eith grader and i am currently working on a persuasive essay i got to choose and am doing research on. My persuasion is that ipods/mp3s should be alowed during certain times. At my school they arent allowed but who follows rules? I carry my iphone around everywhere and sometimes give it a peek during class but if a teacher catches you they will take it and get your parents to pick it up. I believe that we should be able to use them during time that we are not doing anything. For example, in my tech class we have done pointless things for a week straight now. We have been watching how its made and listening to my teacher talk about his horrible life and his ties. Instead of watching these programs why cant we watch our ipods? Or go home early, :) theres another essay. I think its retarded how teachers find it so bad to use technology in school. I believe that if they allow us to use them there should still be strict rules that dont allow us to use them in class unless permited or else! The only thing i would be worried about was geting my phone stolen which has happened. Some ghettos in my school steal stuff and sell it cheap. As soon as it was stolen i chased the guy that some witnesses told me saw him take it and tackled him in the hall and ya... Lets just say he never talked or messed with me again.

Here in Norway (9th grade) we are allowed to listen to music at almost any time, it is working fine here, if someone has their volume too high then we/the teacher tells him/her  to turn it down. We havent had any problems with thievery of any kind. We are not allowed to listen to MP3's when the teacher is talking (of obvious reasons). Even under certain tests we are allowed to listen to MP3's, but only those were recordings wont afflict the test itself. The teachers also thinks this works well and the students seem to be more efficient with music than without. If you take off your phones while everyone is working you will notice that its completly silent, even the loudest guys is silent.

Phones are taken when seen, but can be used to listen to music!

i'm writing a problem/ solution essay for my composition class and i've chosen this topic.

one argument that i believe is very true is that.... why is it okay during study hall for the kid next to me to sleep whenever he wants, but i can't listen to music.  I'm pretty sure that listening to music is just as productive or more productive than what he is doing.

            haha.

I totally agree with you. I am also writing a argumentive essay on why iPods should be used in school.  I think that they should be used because the music can help you focus more on you work rather than other distractions in the classroom. There are programs available on iTunes that students could use to learn in a study hall. Rosetta Stone offers different languages. You can take many different online classes and download them to your iPod. They can be used for many different purposes other than holding your favorite music. I'd like to hear more about your opinion though.  my email is

i have a research project on this it sucks cause i can't find any information on what my teacher calls "important people" who support my arguement. Why would someone "important" be interested in someone doing a research paper on music being allowed in school..

I am a high school senior who writes for my high school newspaper and for the local paper on some occasions. This is the topic for my article this week and i very interested in the many opinions represented in this thread. In my school ipods cell phones and other electronic devices are banned. But this does nothing to prevent their use in the classroom. Kids will still use them no mater what. Banning them is just ignoring the problem and failing to try to recognize the possible usage of them in the class. I think that they should be allowed as long as they are not causing a disruption

well i think ipods should be allowed... just not while the teach teaches.

                            it cuases distractions quite often.

Students should be able to listen to there music when they are working on their own work. I know from personal experience that it helps me concentrate. I can see why teachers and schools say no but they don't understand that it helps us students with our work i just think it's ridiculous that they don't realize this. Even at the time I'm typing this I am listening to music and normally i can barely come up with anything to say but i can. Music helps we should be able to listen to it.
